Many of today’s work environments are stress-filled and confusing. In such environments, employees can hardly think, concentrate or plan for a sustainable future post-employment. Hence, they miss opportunities to develop a coordinated and stress-free exit plan.
This book explains the dilemma of many people in paid employment, especially those who would love to set up a business post-employment.
As a former employee, entrepreneur, and management consultant, the author brings more than a decade of experience into writing this book. He explained the risks and opportunities available in the workplace and how employees can use their contacts, skills, and experiences to set up the businesses of their dreams.
This book has five sections.
In section one; the author shared his experience as a paid employee. He took the reader on a journey of self-realisation. First, the author acknowledged that paid employment provides for the financial and material needs of the employed. Second, he realised that despite the material needs of an employee, they also yearn for new challenges and accomplishments that are derivable through direct involvement in entrepreneurship.
In section two, the book discussed the risk factors faced by a paid employee. Understanding the risk factors prepares the employed for two career outcomes. The first outcome is a sudden loss. The second is a conscious exit based on your terms.
The two outcomes require definite actions to develop and sustain the business or career goals post-employment. This book explains the process for achieving these goals.
Section three described seven myths that stop many people from leaving paid employment. As a result, employed people are held hostage by their jobs due to inherent feelings, fears, thoughts and emotions that do not represent reality. Understanding these myths will give new hope to aspiring entrepreneurs held down by paid employment.
A good career strategy incorporates an exit plan from the beginning. Section four explains why an exit strategy is necessary for career planning. It outlined measures for setting up and managing a workable exit plan from paid employment.
Starting a business is a complex task. Section five discussed the challenges facing start-ups at inception. Apart from the high risk of failure, many entrepreneurs dwell more on previous disappointments without applying the lessons to current endeavours.
This book explains what business success means. It enjoins start-ups to celebrate their successes while acknowledging the imperative of failure.
